The principles of work and energy are important in physics and engineering, especially since they are utilized in a great variety of machines upon which todays industrial technology is based. The terms work and energy have several interpretations in ordinary conversation which include mental activity, farm work, destroying, etc. For man in his environment, the primary source of energy has been the muscles, combustible organic matter mainly in form of wood, coal and petroleum.
The world energy resources are of two types. Renewable and non renewable energy.
Examples of renewable energy are:
A. Solar energy: when it falls on solar cells, electricity is produced.
B. Wind: this turns windmill, which produces electricity for work in farms.
C. Hydroelectricity: indams water turns generators and produces electricity .
Examples of non renewable resources are:
A. Petroleum: the gas is used in power to produce electricity. Petrol and diesel are used as fuel to drive vehicles. Thus chemical energy is transformed to mechanical energy
B. Cpoal: burning or coal produces much heat to boil water in turbines for production of electricity, and also for drivingvof trains and ships.
C. Nuclear energy: this produces enermous heat to operate turbines and drive ships and air crafts.
